Housing Bill Yet to Be Signed
Trump received the bipartisan Housing Deregulation bill on Monday June 29th from Congress. This triggered a 10-day countdown for the President to sign or veto it. (Politico) The president hasn’t committed to signing or vetoing it at this point, although Trump previously warned that he won’t sign anything until Republicans push through the SAVE America Act.
However, the house blocked an attempt to attach the SAVE America Act with the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act), leaving the future of the SAVE America Act uncertain.
If, for some reason, Trump decides to throw away a GOP legislative win by ignoring the housing bill, it will become law sometime around July 10.
Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act Passed
The House passed the bipartisan Kids Internet and Digital Safety (KIDS) Act package in a 267-117 vote, advancing legislation that would require new online safety features for children, expand parental controls, restrict targeted advertising to minors, require age verification for pornography websites, and establish new rules for AI chatbots and online games.
Supporters say the bill is a major step toward protecting children online and increasing accountability for technology companies. However, digital rights groups and tech industry advocates argue the legislation could undermine privacy, anonymous speech, and free expression by encouraging widespread age verification across the internet.
The package now heads to the Senate, where it is expected to face significant hurdles, with some senators arguing it does not go far enough while critics contend it goes too far. Opponents believe that broad legislation like this does nothing to protect anyone. Instead, it blocks state level laws and shields big tech companies from accountability. (Chop Wood/Carry Water)
CLARITY Act
A vote on the CLARITY Act is imminent. This law, as written, contains giant loopholes for people like Trump, who will exploit them to enrich himself further than he already has. (Chop Wood/Carry Water)
BUILD American 250 Act
The House Transportation Committee is pushing the BUILD America 250 Act, a five-year transportation bill that would lock in more highway spending and weaker support for public transit through 2031. The bill cuts total transit funding to levels below those approved under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act while directing even more federal money toward highways.
It also forces communities seeking major transit investments to contribute to a larger local match than communities building new highways. That imbalance would mean more highway expansion, traffic, and pollution.
House Democrats have an immediate responsibility to stop this bill from reaching the floor. Congress must refuse to help enact a five-year transportation policy that sends more money toward highways while shortchanging transit. (Chop Wood/Carry Water)
This week the Senate is on recess.
