This Fourth of July, join Indivisible Central Indiana and Indiana 50501 at a community picnic at Garfield Park, from 1 to 4 pm at the large shelter in the middle of the park.
For those of us who aren’t traveling, and aren’t in the mood to celebrate in the traditional manner, it is an opportunity to spend an afternoon with like-minded individuals, meet people we’ve only interacted with online, and forge new friendships. Burgers and hotdogs and vegan entrees provided; bring a side dish and drinks to share.
Next Friday is the Fourth of July , the 249th birthday of a country teetering on the edge of fascism. How is The Resistance responding?
Indivisible Central Indiana is partnering with Indiana 50501 to co-host a community picnic at Garfield Park from 1 to 4 pm.
Why not a major protest? Well, that is complicated. Most of the national resistance organizations are passing on trying to promote huge rallies. Many of us travel on this long weekend. Many of us are still deeply engaged with local Democratic parties that want to participate in local parades as a show of true, real patriotism. Many of us are too sick at heart to participate in a charade.
So Indivisible Central Indiana and 50501 are going to give our members a way to commemorate the event with like-minded people, to meet face-to-face with folks we have only interacted with online, to forge some new friendships and creative alliances. We will provide burgers, hotdogs, and vegan alternatives (and music, no speakers!); just bring a side dish and some drinks to share.
For those of you who want to be at morning parades in outlying communities (Brownsburg, Lebanon, Carmel, etc.) as marchers or sideline demonstrators, you can do that and come join us to debrief. We won’t dictate how you should demonstrate; whether to fly your flag right-side up or upside down. Our recommendation is to make any signage positive rather than overtly negative; to promote true patriotism with messages of “Liberty and Justice for ALL” rather than alienating neighbors with explicitly anti-Trump signage, much in the way that Indivisible Westside demonstrated along the Indy 500 parade with emphasizing our welcome to race fans of ALL nationalities.

If that is what appeals to you but you don’t know where to start, email us at info@indivisiblecentralindiana.org and we will connect you with others. Go to a parade and then come debrief with us at a community picnic. Or just come to the picnic. Bring a friend. Just please let us know how many to plan for by registering here.
