The Path to Criminalizing Homelessness

Updated: Aug 4, 2025

An executive order this week is potentially the beginning of the criminalization of homelessness.

Although the order states that unhoused people will be placed in facilities for treatment, many believe it is the beginning of disappearing the homeless from our communities. We need to be vigilant about providing dignified care and concern for our homeless population, gaining understanding of their culture and community rather than erasing them from our cities and towns.

Here is one of the organizations working with the unhoused in central Indiana, Allies in Humanity. They are currently focused on the Winter Contingency Plan that the city of Indianapolis is building right now. AIH advocates for transparency around this plan and for the incorporation for public input, especially from the people most impacted.
